The Flame Test Hand is built from a high temperature, non-degrading, ceramic-composite material with machined, integrated mounting locations for 9 calorimeter sensors.
Fingers can be specified as permanently attached or removable, and an articulated thumb simplifies the installation and removal of test gloves.
Exposure sensors are located in the forearm area (4), back of the hand (3), and on the palm of the hand (2).

Fingers and the hand form are durable enough to withstand multiple direct flame exposures that approach 1800°C, lasting as long as 4 seconds.
4 heat flux calorimeter sensors are located in the forearm area, 3 sensors are on the back of the hand, and 2 sensors are on the palm of the hand.
During a test the total energy transmitted and recorded by the sensors is used to predict whether a second degree burn injury will occur.
If a second degree burn injury is predicted, the time to a second degree burn injury is reported.
