Variable Speed Models (V)

Models D10 & D16

The variable speed models have all of the features as the set speed models, plus variable speed. Each model has its own stroke length for its particular application. The stroke length is centered and shortened from both sides. Rate limits shown for all variable cycle rate (cyc/min) machines are factory set, but may be shifted for specific requirements. Instructions for this change are furnished with the unit.
Model D12V, when fitted with the test sample tray serves as a laboratory machine. This model has the base cutout feature. When the tray is removed, an extended drive fork may be added to pass through an opening in the base plate. This permits a test to be conducted directly on the surface on which the machine is placed. Stainless steel handles are attached to the ends of the housing to enhance portability for field use.

  • Variable Set Control: Allows accelerated testing. Possibly called for in future specifications.
  • Designed for Present Day Washability Tests: Applicable to all present set speed 37 cycle rate tests called for in various specifications.
  • ASTM Specifications: Applicable to tests calling for use of 37 cycle rate Washability machines. FTMS, MIL, ISO and Other Specifications: Also applicable to tests calling for set rate, 37 cycle machines.
  • Runs Three Tests Simultaneously: Up to three multiple specimen tests possible.
Model D12V Only
  • Base Cutout Feature: Allows test to be made directly on surface on which machine is placed; such as a ship deck or mall floor.
  • Use on Site / in Lab: Extended fork is required when tests are made through cutout base. All models come with standard fork unless extended is specified.
  • Handles: For portability to test site.

Variable Speed / Force Sensing (VF)

Models D7VF, D8VF, D9VF, D10VF, D12VF & D16VF

The variable speed / force sensing models are basically the same machines as the variable speed machines except a force transducer is added to the drive fork linkage. Output from the force transducer is displayed in large numbers on the front of the machine. The display registers resistance to motion of the fork to the one-tenth pound .
Model D12VF, when fitted with the test sample tray serves as a laboratory machine. This model has the base cutout feature. When the tray is removed, an extended drive fork may be added to pass through an opening in the base plate. This permits a test to be conducted directly on the surface on which the machine is placed. Stainless steel handles are attached to the ends of the housing to enhance portability for field use.

  • Built-In Force Measurement Feature: Resistance to motion (a measurement proportional to friction) is shown on control panel to the nearest 1/10 lb.
  • Variable Speed Control: Allows accelerated testing. Possibly called for in future specifications.
  • Designed for Present Day Washability Tests: Applicable to all 37 cycle rate test specifications.
  • ASTM Specifications: Applicable to Tests calling for use of 37 cycle rate Washability machines. FTMS, MIL, ISO and Other Specifications: Also applicable to tests calling for set rate, 37 cycle machines.

Compliance

All Gardco designed and manufactured linear motion test equipment is described and specified in much greater detail than is called for in most of the many methods of test developed and promulgated by ASTM and other industrial and Federal agencies. Care has been taken in design and manufacture not only to overcome deficiencies in earlier equipment of this type but also to comply with the specifics as well as the intent of existing standards that call for the use of such equipment. The following is a list of standards and methods of test that call for this type of equipment.

Simple Operation

  1. Connect a compressed air supply to the 1/4" npt bulkhead fitting on left side of the machine.
  2. Set predetermined counter for desired number of cycles. Count-down counter will automatically stop the machine when zero is reached.
  3. Depress green button to start machine.
  4. Set speed cycle by turning micrometer style speed control knob on front panel. Turn clockwise to decrease speed; counter-clockwise to increase speed.
  5. Depress red stop button on front panel to stop machine.
  6. Secure the item to be evaluated in test position in accordance with appropriate standard procedure and start machine.
  7. Test can be interrupted at any time by pressing red button.
  8. See instruction manual for complete procedures.

Characteristics Common to Pneumatic Model

  • Dimensions: The base is 0.25 inch thick aluminum plate. It is 16" deep and 16" long. One-half of the depth of the machine supports all functional mechanisms and their housing. The front half of the base provides the working surface or area for product testing. The base
is supported on one-half inch high feet to provide clearance for clamping test products at both ends and along the entire front edge of the base.
  • Net Weight: Approx. 40-50 pounds.
  • All functional elements are mounted above the normal level for product testing and therefore are not subject to damage by accidental liquid spills.
  • Heavy gage brushed aluminum houses all functional components with only the drive fork bracket extending forward to carry the drive fork over the test area. Access to the component area is by removal of only four screws from the lid of the housing. All controls and indicators
are mounted on the front surface of this housing. The housing is ten inches high and the PSI dial is viewed through the cut-out on top cover.
  • The drive fork is fabricated from 1/16" stainless steel. It is held in place by a bracket of the same material which is secured to linear bearings carried on accurately spaced parallel bars. Reciprocation of the drive fork assembly on the parallel bars is by a unique double chain and sprocket arrangement. There are no belts, cables, springs or other such mechanisms in the drive chain requiring service or maintenance.
  • Absolute linearity is obtained with the unique drive system. Acceleration and deceleration is sinusoidal providing for the smoothest possible change in direction at the end of each stroke.
  • The drive fork is adjustable vertically with respect to its drive bracket. In its lowermost position it is less than one-half inch above the test surface with the tray and glass plate in place. This relative low position minimizes the tendency of the carried surface to tilt in the
direction of travel. The fork can be raised in half inch steps, inverted and further raised to accommodate test specimens up to two and a half inches thick without losing close proximity to the test surface.
  • Design of the drive fork cradles accessories used in the test and permits them to simply be lifted free. There are, therefore, no rotational or other unbalancing forces imposed on such auxiliaries. They are “Free Floating” and self-leveling.
  • There are three equally spaced holes in each of the tines of the drive fork. A test auxiliary can be placed in either of the three pairs of holes to accommodate positioning of the test specimen. The spacing also permits simultaneous cradling of three brush boxes, two abrasion boats or two sponge boxes for multiple specimen testing.
  • The cycle counter is air operated and is energized through a switch from the drive linkage. The desired number of cycles is set by hand on push buttons on the face of the counter. There are five of these buttons for a maximum setting of 99,999. On start of operation, the counter cycles backwards from the preset value until it reaches zero and turns off the machine. The counter then may be manually reset to run the same number of cycles or the count may be changed.
  • Furnished with each machine is an instruction manual covering operation and maintenance. Included are schematic diagrams.
  • After every 100 hours of operation, the filter regulator lubricator should be purged of accumulated moisture. Add lubricant if needed. (See instruction manual)
  • After 2000 hours, or once a year, oil the drive chains. Brush oil directly on rollers. Use an artist brush. A few drops of oil should be placed on the parallel bars and at each end of the “tail” sprocket bearings.
